Tobakken

Converted tobacco factory, the city's main live-music venue

Tobakken — the local nickname for the old C.W. Obel tobacco factory — was turned into a music venue and cultural centre in the 1990s and is now where most of the touring rock, hip-hop, and indie acts that bother with Jutland end up playing. The main hall holds a couple of thousand standing, the small stage and bar do club nights for a few hundred, and the in-house café is a perfectly decent place to drink even when there is nothing programmed upstairs.

The building itself is worth a look: brick, four stories, the C.W. Obel name still legible above the door. It sits in the rapidly gentrifying Rørkjær district a ten-minute walk south of Torvet. Check the website for the gig calendar — bookings range from Danish indie names you have never heard of to international acts on Scandinavian tours.
