Lake Esrum

Broad North Zealand lake west of Fredensborg Palace.

Lake Esrum lies just west of Fredensborg and gives the palace landscape its open, watery horizon. It is Denmark's second-largest lake by surface area, bordered by forest, reeds, and quiet villages rather than resorts. From the palace garden, paths lead towards the lakeshore for a longer walk.

The lake is best as a gentle extension to a palace visit. In summer, you may find boats, kayaks, and lakeside tables near the town side; in colder months it is simply a good place to breathe after the formal garden. Bring practical shoes if the weather has been wet.
