Copenhagen Zoo

One of Europe's oldest zoos, at the edge of Frederiksberg Gardens

Copenhagen Zoo is well worth a visit, particularly for families. The collection is strong on northern European species — polar bears, wolves, snow leopards — but covers a wide range from the tropics. The Norman Foster elephant house is architecturally striking, a large glass bubble set in a circular moat.

The zoo borders Frederiksberg Gardens at the southern end, which makes a good combination visit: zoo in the morning, gardens in the afternoon. The elephant house and the African savanna section are the highlights. The zoo is open year-round, with reduced hours in winter.

A story
Copenhagen Zoo opened in 1859, making it one of the oldest zoos in Europe. The elephant house was designed by Norman Foster in 2008 and won several architectural awards, though it attracted controversy for the death of several elephants in its early years. In 2014 the zoo made international headlines when it publicly euthanised a healthy young giraffe named Marius, which it said was genetically surplus, and fed the carcass to lions in front of visitors. The zoo defended the decision as sound zoo biology; much of the world disagreed.
