Frederiksberg

Independent municipality within Copenhagen, known for broad avenues, Frederiksberg Gardens, and Cisternerne underground art space.

Frederiksberg is a municipality entirely surrounded by Copenhagen, though it is technically an independent municipality and not part of the city. From a visitor's perspective the distinction is invisible: Frederiksberg is a wealthy, gracious inner suburb that feels like a seamless part of central Copenhagen, with wide tree-lined avenues, elegant apartment buildings, and an excellent collection of parks and cultural institutions.

Frederiksberg Gardens (Frederiksberg Have) is one of the finest landscape gardens in Denmark, running up to the Frederiksberg Palace — a Baroque royal summer residence now used as a military academy, with gardens open to the public. The Copenhagen Zoo is at the southern edge of the park, and the two make a natural combination visit.

Cisternerne, a former Victorian water reservoir beneath the adjoining Søndermarken park, has been converted into one of Copenhagen's most unusual contemporary art venues — a vast, dimly lit underground space with water on the floor where visitors are given Wellington boots. The Storm P. Museum is a charming small museum dedicated to Denmark's most beloved humorist. Frederiksberg Allé is the best street to eat and drink in the municipality.

Frederiksberg is a natural base for visiting Copenhagen, with good metro connections and a slightly more residential, quieter atmosphere than the most central areas of the city.
