Church of Our Lady

Five-towered medieval brick church that dominates Kalundborg's old high town.

Vor Frue Kirke is Kalundborg's unmistakable landmark: a red-brick medieval church built on a Greek cross plan, with a central tower and four smaller towers rising from the arms. The shape is bold, almost odd, and it gives the old town its skyline.

The church was begun around the early 13th century, when Kalundborg was a fortified town of real importance. The central tower collapsed in 1827 and was rebuilt in the 19th century, but the building still feels strongly medieval. The interior is plainer than the outside, so walk around it from the lanes and churchyard to get the full effect.
