Kalundborg

West Zealand harbour town with a medieval high town and the Røsnæs peninsula beside it.

Kalundborg sits on the west coast of Zealand, tucked inside Kalundborg Fjord between the Røsnæs and Asnæs peninsulas. It is a working harbour and industrial town, but the old high town above the centre gives it more character than you might expect at first glance.

The main sight is Church of Our Lady, a brick medieval church with five towers and a silhouette unlike anything else in Denmark. Around it are lanes, old houses, monastery remains, and fragments of the fortified town that grew up here after Esbern Snare founded Kalundborg in the 12th century.

Røsnæs stretches west from town into open sea and low, glacially shaped hills. The peninsula has beaches, dolmens, a lighthouse, and quiet lanes that work well by bike. Kalundborg also sits on useful ferry routes: it can be a slower but pleasant way to move between Copenhagen, Samsø, and Jutland.
