Maribo Cathedral

Gothic brick cathedral founded 1416 with oldest painting on canvas in Scandinavia

Maribo Cathedral is a late-Gothic red-brick hall church founded around 1416 as part of a Bridgettine abbey, and one of Denmark's few cathedrals outside a major city. It is architecturally unusual because the chancel faces west, per the specific instructions of Saint Bridget herself. The interior houses the Bridget Altar — a late-15th-century painted triptych considered the oldest surviving painting on canvas in Scandinavia. The cathedral survived the Reformation largely intact, and the old abbey precinct around it has a quiet, almost monastic atmosphere. Open daily 09:00–17:00.
