Sankt Peders Kirke is Næstved's largest and most important medieval church, built in red brick in the Gothic style during the 14th century. The interior is famous for its extensive frescoes, which cover the vault ceilings with scenes from the life of Christ, depictions of saints, and the remarkable royal portraits that make it unique among Danish churches.
The church is large for a provincial town, a reminder that Næstved was a significant market centre in the Middle Ages. The tower dominates the town skyline and the building has been kept in excellent condition. It is open to visitors most of the year and entry is free.
