The main town museum and the place to begin any visit. Ribes Vikinger covers thirteen hundred years of Ribe history, from the original eighth-century Viking trading market beside the river to the medieval town that became the seat of one of Denmark's two archbishops. The galleries are modern, well-paced and largely in English as well as Danish.
The highlights are the artefacts from the early Viking market — combs, beads, weights, casting moulds — and a full-size reconstruction of a Ribe street as it would have looked in the 1500s, with merchants' houses and an inn. The museum also handles the town's witch-burning era and the great floods that periodically wiped out parts of the lower town. Combine with the outdoor Ribe Viking Centre for the living-history experience.
