Wadden Sea Centre

About 10 km west of Ribe at Vester Vedsted, the Wadden Sea Centre (Vadehavscentret) is the visitor centre for the Danish part of the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea — the enormous tidal flat ecosystem stretching down the coast from Denmark through Germany to the Netherlands. The exhibitions cover the migratory bird populations that use the flats as a stopover, the tidal ecology, and the human history of the area.

The building itself, finished in 2017, is itself a destination — a striking pleated thatched-roof structure by Dorte Mandrup, built almost entirely from local reed. The centre runs guided trips onto the mudflats, oyster-collecting trips in season, and black sun starling-watching expeditions in spring and autumn.
