Hans Christian Ørsted was born in 1777 in his father's pharmacy on Rudkøbing's main square, Gåsetorvet — the building still stands. In 1820 he became the first person to observe a connection between electricity and magnetism, laying the groundwork for electromagnetism as a field of science. The H.C. Ørsted Exhibition, part of Langelands Museum and housed near the birthplace, presents his life and discovery with original instruments and documents. A bronze statue of Ørsted stands in the square. Admission is free.
