Rudkøbing

Langeland's main harbour town, with a preserved core of 18th-century merchants' houses.

Rudkøbing is Langeland's main town and only real urban centre, a small harbour town with a well-preserved old core of 18th-century merchants' houses around the church square. It was the birthplace of Hans Christian Ørsted, the physicist who discovered electromagnetism in 1820, and a small museum in his childhood home commemorates him. The harbour has a few good restaurants and a working-boat feel that distinguishes it from the more polished island towns further north.
