When to Go

Narva-Jõesuu is a summer resort, and almost everyone visits between June and August. The Gulf of Finland here is cold — water temperatures rarely exceed 20°C even in peak summer — but that does not deter the Estonians who flock to the beach on warm weekends. July and early August are the busiest weeks; the town has a relaxed holiday atmosphere and the beach is at its most populated, though never overwhelmingly so.

June is pleasant and less crowded, with long Nordic evenings and the white nights casting a flat, luminous light over the water. By mid-September the beach crowd has mostly gone, the forest is turning, and the town settles back into its off-season quiet. Visiting in autumn or spring is possible but most accommodation and cafes will be closed.

Winter brings snow and ice to the Gulf, sometimes freezing the shallow coastal waters. It is a stark, beautiful setting but there is little infrastructure for visitors in the cold months.
