Things to Do

Ruhnu is not a destination for a long itinerary — it is a destination for silence, birding, and wandering through a landscape that feels genuinely remote. The Church of Saint Magdalene, a 17th-century wooden church, and the Ruhnu Lighthouse are the two structures worth seeking out. The rest of the island is forest, bog, and meadow, with a network of tracks that can be covered by bicycle or on foot.

Birdwatching is serious business here: Ruhnu sits on a major migration route through the Gulf of Riga, and spring and autumn bring large numbers of waders and waterfowl. The island's small size means even casual walkers encounter a remarkable density of birds during migration season.
