Raekoja plats (Town Hall Square)

Medieval town square and the heart of Tallinn's Old Town

Raekoja plats is the gravitational centre of Tallinn — the medieval market square that has been the city's main gathering place for eight centuries. The Gothic town hall on the north side, completed in the 15th century, is the oldest functioning town hall in northern Europe, and its slender tower and elegant arcade are the most photographed element of the Tallinn skyline.

The square comes alive in summer when cafes fill every inch of outdoor space, and in winter when the Christmas market takes over and the square becomes one of the most festive in Europe. A good starting point for any exploration of the Old Town, with Pikk jalg (the Long Leg) leading up the hill to Toompea and the rest of the lower town radiating out in all directions.

A story
The town hall on the square is the oldest functioning Gothic town hall in northern Europe, built between 1371 and 1404. The weather vane on top — Old Thomas, a figure in armour — has watched over the square since 1530. The original is now in the Tallinn City Museum; the one on the spire today is a copy, but Old Thomas is still the unofficial guardian of the city.
