Föroya Bjór

The Faroes' oldest brewery, founded 1888 — tours and a tap room in Klaksvík harbour

Föroya Bjór, on the harbour at Klaksvík, is the Faroes' oldest brewery — founded in 1888 by the local merchant Símun í Vági. It has been the dominant Faroese beer brand ever since; Klassic, Black Sheep, and Gull are the standard range, and the Christmas seasonal beers are eagerly waited for each winter. The brewery still uses water drawn from a stream on the mountain behind the town.

A small visitor centre on the harbour offers tours of the brewing floor (booking required, in English on request) ending with a tasting in the tap room. The tap room itself is open evenings to walk-ins and is one of the more pleasant places to spend an hour in Klaksvík, with a fire in winter and the harbour view through the windows. The brewery also sells from its shop at the harbour.
