From Tórshavn or Vágar Airport, Borðoy is reached by car via the Norðoyatunnilin subsea tunnel under the Leirvíksfjørður. The drive from Tórshavn is about 75 km and takes a little under an hour and a half; the tunnel is tolled at around 100 DKK each way. Buses (route 400 and 500 combinations via Leirvík) run several times a day from Tórshavn to Klaksvík.
From Borðoy itself, causeways link the island to Kunoy and Viðoy. The ferry to Kalsoy departs from Klaksvík harbour several times a day. The remoter islands of Fugloy and Svínoy are reached by helicopter or by the small passenger ferry from Hvannasund on Viðoy — both can be cancelled in bad weather. There is no airport on Borðoy.
