Árnafjørður

Tiny fjord-side village on the east coast of Borðoy with around 50 residents

Árnafjørður is a small village of about 50 people on the east coast of Borðoy, set at the head of the eponymous narrow fjord with steep grass slopes rising 600 metres on three sides. The village is little more than a single line of houses along the road, with a small white church and a turf-roofed boat shelter on the shore, but the setting — particularly in the late evening light of a Faroese summer — is the kind of quiet drama that the Faroes do better than anywhere.

The road from Klaksvík to Árnafjørður is 8 km along the east coast, passing the small turf-roofed church at Anir and the fishing hamlet of Norðtoftir. Beyond Árnafjørður the road continues north through a tunnel under Hálsur ridge to Norðdepil, where the road across to Viðoy splits off and the rougher track to Múli begins.
