Í Koytu House Museum

Í Koytu is a preserved traditional farmhouse in Sandur that now serves as a house museum illustrating daily life on Sandoy in earlier centuries. The building complex — the main house, outbuildings, and stone-walled yard — has been preserved as an example of the traditional Faroese longhouse farm type, with period furnishings and agricultural tools.

The museum is modest in scale but well-maintained, and the contrast between the preserved interior and the working pastoral landscape visible through the windows gives a vivid sense of how isolated island life once was. In conjunction with the Listasavnið art museum, it provides a more complete picture of Sandoy's culture than either would alone.

A story
The name "Í Koytu" means "in the enclosure" in Faroese — a reference to the stone-walled farmyard that defines traditional Faroese building groups. The museum preserves one of the few such complexes on Sandoy that has survived intact, giving visitors a clear sense of the material conditions of island life before the 20th century brought electricity, roads, and connection to the wider world.
