Mariehamn has a small dining scene centered around Torggatan and the western harbour. Fish and seafood are the local speciality: Baltic herring (strömming), perch, pike, and the excellent Åland lamb from the outer islands. The farm shop and café culture in the surrounding islands is better than in the town itself — if you're cycling the archipelago, plan your lunch around the lanthandel (farm shops) rather than eating before you leave.
Åland pancakes (Åländsk plättar) — a thick baked pancake topped with stewed prunes and whipped cream — are the island's most distinctive food and available at most cafés.
