Espoo Cathedral

Whitewashed stone medieval church, the oldest building in Espoo

Address Kirkkopuisto 5, 02770 Espoo

The Espoo Cathedral is the oldest standing building in the city, dating from the late 1480s. It is built in the regional grey-stone style — whitewashed walls, stepped gables, and a roof of red tile — and is small and severe inside, more parish kirk than grand cathedral despite its rank. Frescoes of biblical scenes survive on the walls and ceiling vaults, painted around 1510 and rediscovered under whitewash in 1923.

The cathedral became the seat of the new diocese of Espoo in 2004, hence the upgraded title. It still functions as a working parish church. The grassed churchyard around it is one of the few places in modern Espoo where the older agricultural village is still visible. Open daytime hours in summer; check ahead in winter.
