English Park (Englantilaisten puisto)

Tucked into the Neristan quarter is English Park, a small public garden that contains one of the more unusual historical curiosities in Finland: a British longboat captured during the Crimean War. In June 1854 a British naval squadron attacked the Kokkola coast as part of a campaign against Russian-controlled Finland. The local militia drove off the landing party, capturing their boat and several sailors. The boat was kept as a trophy and eventually displayed in the park.

The park itself is modest and pleasant, shaded by old trees. The boat is in reasonable condition given its age and exposure. There is an information board in Finnish, Swedish, and English explaining the engagement. It takes five minutes to visit but it is worth combining with a walk through Neristan, which it adjoins.

A story
The English sailors in the park's story arrived during the Crimean War (1854–55), when a British fleet attacked the Finnish coast in an attempt to weaken Russia, which then controlled Finland. The Kokkola militia repulsed the British landing party, capturing a longboat and several prisoners. The longboat has been in the park ever since — a somewhat unlikely trophy from an episode the Finns remember and the British largely do not.
