Lake Kallavesi

The surrounding lake — boat cruises and summer swimming

Lake Kallavesi wraps around three sides of Kuopio's peninsula and is inseparable from the character of the city. The lake is large — about 470 square kilometres — and the forested islands and inlets visible from the city's edges give a sense of the vast Finnish lake district extending in all directions.

Boat cruises on Kallavesi run from the city harbour throughout summer, ranging from short sightseeing trips to longer journeys through the lake system. The city beaches at Väinölänniemi, on the southern tip of the peninsula, are popular for swimming in summer. The lake freezes solidly enough for ice fishing from November to April.

A story
Kuopio sits on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Kallavesi, which is part of the vast Saimaa lake system — the largest in Finland and one of the largest in Europe. The lake connects to hundreds of others through a web of channels and waterways. In summer, passenger steamships still operate on some of these routes, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 19th century.
