Lappeenranta's city centre and fortress are compact and walkable. The harbour, fortress, and main shopping street are all within 15 minutes' walk of each other. The airport and Karelia Aviation Museum are about 3 kilometres southwest of the centre — a short taxi or bus ride. City buses cover the wider municipality, including the university campus at Skinnarila to the southwest.
Cycling is practical in summer; the city has cycle lanes on main roads and the flat topography makes it easy. Bike rental is available near the harbour in season.
