The Kauppatori is the central market square of Savonlinna and the main meeting point in the town — a small open space on the waterfront where the morning market sets up daily in summer with fresh fish (smoked vendace from Lake Saimaa is the speciality), berries, and savoury pastries.
The harbour next to the market is the departure point for sightseeing boats and the daily summer steamer cruises across Lake Saimaa. Several restaurants and cafes have terraces overlooking the water; in July the area gets crowded with festival-goers in evening dress on their way to the castle.
