Savonlinna Cathedral is the Lutheran parish church of the town and stands prominently on the main island a few minutes' walk from the harbour. The current Neo-Gothic building was completed in 1879 to designs by the Finnish-Swedish architect A. H. Dahlström, replacing an earlier wooden church on the same spot.
The brick exterior, painted pale red, dominates the skyline from across the water. The interior was largely rebuilt after a Soviet bomb hit the church in 1940 — the original altar was destroyed, and the current furnishings date mostly from the late 1940s. Free entry; quiet outside Sunday service.
