The old silk-weavers' quarter, draped over the hill on the north end of the Presqu'île. When the Jacquard loom arrived in the 1800s, local workshops had to build taller buildings to house the new machines, and the result was this grid of steep streets and deep courtyards laced with traboules that the canuts (weavers) used to move their silks. Today it is a quietly bohemian residential neighbourhood with a fine morning market along Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse, good coffee, and superb views back down over the rooftops of central Lyon.
