Colmar's covered market is housed in a handsome red-brick 19th-century hall on the Quai de la Poissonnerie, restored in 2010 after years of neglect. The two-dozen stalls inside concentrate on Alsatian specialities — charcuterie, cheeses (especially Munster), bredele biscuits, smoked sausages, sauerkraut by the kilo — and the city's best fresh produce.
It is open Tuesday through Sunday morning, closed Sunday afternoon and all day Monday. Several stalls keep small bar tops and serve glasses of Alsatian wine, plates of tarte flambée and oysters; in winter, the cassoulet stall does a steady trade. Come hungry; come early on Saturday if you want any of the duck rillette before noon.
