Saturday Market

The Saturday market at Place Chapou and Place de la Résistance is one of the best weekly markets in the Lot department — not tourist-focused, but a genuine local market where farmers from the surrounding Quercy countryside come to sell what they have grown and made. The produce changes with the season: in autumn, black truffles and cèpes from the limestone causes; in spring, white asparagus and strawberries; year-round, foie gras, walnuts, goat cheese, and the dark Cahors Malbec wine.

The market runs from about 7am to 1pm. It is worth arriving by 9am when the best produce is still available and the farmers are still willing to chat. Even if you are not buying, it is an excellent window into the food culture of this corner of France.
