Maison Martell

The oldest of the grandes maisons, founded 1715

Address 16 Avenue Paul Firino Martell, 16100 Cognac

Martell offers guided visits of its historic cellars and ageing warehouses, organized around a route through the cooperage, the paradise cellars where the oldest eaux-de-vie are kept, and a dedicated tasting room. The production facilities are extensive — Martell has access to roughly 4,000 family-owned vineyards in the Grande Champagne and Borderies crus, the most prized growing areas for cognac grapes.

The visitor experience is slightly more intimate than Hennessy and feels a little less corporate. The architecturally striking new blending hall added in recent years is worth seeing. Book online.

A story
Martell, founded in 1715 by Jerseyman Jean Martell, is the oldest of Cognac's grandes maisons. It was the first cognac house to sell to China in the 19th century, and remains the market leader there today. The original founder arrived in Cognac with 96 livres in his pocket and turned a small wine-trading business into one of the most valuable spirit brands in the world.
