La Roque-Gageac

La Roque-Gageac is one of the most photographed villages in France, and from Domme's Belvédère you can see exactly why: the village is pressed against a south-facing cliff that drops straight into the Dordogne, and the rock above reflects heat so effectively that banana trees and other subtropical plants grow in the gardens. The main street runs along the river, the cliffs overhang it, and the whole arrangement has an improbable beauty.

The village is best seen from the river itself — canoe and kayak rental is available and the paddle from La Roque-Gageac to Beynac takes about two hours against a gentle current. The troglodyte fort carved into the cliff above the village can be visited on foot; it dates from the medieval period and was used as a refuge during raids. The village is 6 kilometres west of Domme on the D46 — it can be combined with visits to Château de Castelnaud and Château de Beynac in a single loop along the river valley.
