The Musee des Automates is a charmingly old-fashioned museum devoted to mechanical figures, animated shop displays, and miniature scenes. It is not the blockbuster museum in La Rochelle, but it has a particular appeal: cabinets, moving figures, fairground nostalgia, and the kind of pre-digital ingenuity that children often understand immediately.
It sits near the maritime museum area, so it is easy to combine with the harbour and other waterfront sights. Go when you want a lighter indoor stop rather than a deep history lesson. The pleasure is in the details and in watching small mechanisms do their work.
