Eglise Saint-Vivien

Neoclassical Saintes church built on a site linked to the city’s early bishop Saint Vivien.

Eglise Saint-Vivien is not as famous as Saintes' Roman amphitheatre or Abbaye aux Dames, but it adds another layer to a city full of religious history. The present church dates from the nineteenth century and stands on a site traditionally associated with Saint Vivien, an early bishop of Saintes.

Its restrained neoclassical lines make it a quieter visit than the great Romanesque monuments nearby. Stop in if you are walking the northern side of the old town; it works best as part of a slow circuit through Saintes rather than as a destination on its own.
