Église Saint-Mathieu

The collegiate church of Saint-Mathieu dominates the upper end of the village, its Romanesque tower visible from the road approaching town. The interior is more rewarding than the rather plain exterior suggests: the carved choir stalls, the polychrome entombment group, and the Flemish tapestries together make it one of the more interesting small churches in the Cantal.

The church is usually open during the day from spring through autumn. Take a few minutes to walk around the outside too — the apse and the tower show the quality of the medieval Romanesque stonework that the Auvergne is justly famous for.

A story
The church contains a celebrated 15th-century mise en tombeau — a polychrome stone entombment of Christ with six figures surrounding the body. It survived the Revolution largely intact, hidden by locals. The Flemish tapestries in the nave were brought back by a local nobleman who fought in the Italian Wars.
