Montréal is best used as a quiet base for the Avallonnais. Vézelay, with its great Romanesque basilica, is half an hour west and the obvious next stop. The wooded Morvan starts immediately to the south, and Lormes is a useful gateway. The medieval town of Avallon itself is fifteen minutes away by car.
