Porte d'Avallon

The Porte d'Avallon is the surviving medieval gate at the entrance to the upper village. Built into the old ramparts, it carries the village's coat of arms and frames a postcard view back down the rue Principale toward the church tower. A second, smaller gate — the Porte d'En-Bas — closes the lower end of the same street.

Walking from one gate to the other takes about ten minutes if you don't stop. Most people stop, because the houses in between are a near-intact set of late-medieval and Renaissance stone façades, several with mullioned windows and carved doorways. There is little signage, and almost no other visitors.
