The Musée de la Corse occupies the former barracks of the citadel and is the island's foremost museum of Corsican civilization. The permanent collection covers the full range of life on the island: agricultural tools, traditional costumes, religious art, musical instruments, and archival material on the independence period. There is always a serious temporary exhibition running alongside.
The building itself rewards attention — it was designed by Andrea Bruno and integrates ancient stonework with modern steel and glass in ways that work surprisingly well. The cafe on the terrace is a good place to rest. Allow at least ninety minutes. Closed on Mondays and during the winter; check current hours before visiting.
