The Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Immaculee-Conception sits in the centre of the old town, a few steps from the Musée Picasso. The Romanesque bell tower at the back is the oldest part — 12th century, with traces of an earlier church on the site. The west front is 17th-century Baroque, an unexpected pink and ochre confection.
Inside, the main treasure is a 1515 altarpiece by Louis Bréa, the Niçois painter whose work also turns up in Cimiez and Monaco. It depicts the Virgin in glory above a row of saints. The cathedral is no longer a cathedral in formal terms — it lost the seat in the Revolution — but locals still call it that.
