The Roman amphitheatre on the western edge of the old town is one of the best-preserved in France, and the fact that it still hosts live events makes it feel genuinely alive rather than simply archaeological. The elliptical arena dates from the first century AD and its lower tiers of stone seating are substantially intact, with the characteristic oval shape and the underground passages where animals and gladiators waited still clearly visible.
In summer the site hosts concerts, spectacles, and occasional traditional bullfights. Coming on an event night, with the stone walls lit against the Provençal sky and several thousand people filling seats that have held audiences for two millennia, is one of those experiences that makes you feel the actual weight of history in a way that no museum ever quite manages. Outside performance season the site is open for exploration, and you can walk down into the arena and the lower passages at leisure.
