La Caravelle is tucked on the first floor of the Hôtel Bellevue on the Quai du Port, a 1930s wood-panelled bar with red leather banquettes and an unbeatable balcony looking straight across the harbour to the southern quay and Notre-Dame de la Garde rising behind it. Few visitors look up and notice it from the street, which is part of the appeal.
Order a pastis, a verre de vin or a cocktail and head for the terrace at sunset; the dipping sun lights the basilica gold over the masts of the moored yachts. Live jazz several evenings a week, decent tapas, and Provençal small plates if you want to stay through dinner. Arrive early on weekends if you want a seat on the balcony.
