Statue du David

Marble copy of Michelangelo's David on the waterfront

A full-size copy of Michelangelo's David stands on the Promenade Georges Pompidou near the Palais du Pharo, overlooking the entrance to the Vieux-Port. Sculpted in Carrara marble by Jules Cantini in 1903 and donated to the city, it is one of several public works funded by the wealthy Marseillais industrialist. The white marble catches the Mediterranean light well, and the waterfront setting makes for a pleasant stop on a walk between the Pharo gardens and the old port.
