Orb Aqueduct

Canal du Midi carried over the Orb River on a stone bridge — one of Riquet's most elegant structures

The Pont-Canal de l'Orb carries the Canal du Midi directly over the Orb River on a stone aqueduct — a technically demanding solution that Riquet proposed as an alternative to the originally planned riverside diversion. Completed in 1858 as part of a later improvement to the canal (Riquet's original crossing was at river level), the aqueduct allows boats to cross the river with no change in water level, which was a significant engineering achievement for its time.

The aqueduct is a ten-minute walk from the city centre and can be seen from the riverbanks below or walked across on the canal towpath above. Looking downstream from the towpath, the view takes in the Orb, the old town on the hill, and the cathedral. Cyclists on the Canal du Midi route cross it as a matter of course; for those on foot, it is worth visiting in combination with the Fonsérannes Locks, which are a short walk further along the canal.
