The Causse Méjean is the high limestone plateau directly above Florac, rising to 1,200 metres and covering roughly 350 square kilometres. There are no rivers, few trees, and almost no people — just sheep, lammergeier vultures, prehistoric menhirs, and a few stone hamlets that look much as they did five hundred years ago. The Przewalski wild horse has been re-introduced on the western edge.
Drive across via the D16 from Florac, or hike the GR6 long-distance path. The Aven Armand cave system on the south-western corner is one of the most spectacular show caves in France.
