Mont Lozère

Granite massif east of Florac, highest point in the Cévennes at 1,699m

The Mont Lozère massif sits east of Florac and tops out at 1,699 metres at the Sommet de Finiels — the highest point of the Cévennes. Unlike the limestone causses to the west, it is granite, rounded, and covered in heath and bracken. In winter there is enough snow for a small ski station at Le Bleymard-Mont-Lozère; in summer it is excellent walking country, with the GR7 and the Stevenson trail (GR70) both crossing the summit.

The drive up from Florac via the D998 to Pont-de-Montvert is one of the prettiest in the area, with valleys of chestnut trees giving way slowly to bare granite.
