Tarascon-sur-Ariège is the gateway to one of the densest concentrations of decorated prehistoric caves in Europe. The valley around the town hides paintings made 14,000 years ago, vast caverns used by Cathar refugees, and a Magdalenian art park that explains it all. The town itself has a ruined castle on the hill and a riverside old quarter worth an hour or two between cave visits.
