Almost everything at Chenonceau is organized around the château and its grounds. The castle itself rewards a slow visit — there are fifteen rooms open to the public, each richly furnished and carrying its own layer of the building's women's history. The two formal gardens on either bank of the Cher are best in the morning before the tour buses arrive. The gallery bridge over the river is best appreciated from the water; boat hire is available at the château.
