Musee d'Art et d'Histoire

The Musee d'Art et d'Histoire occupies a handsome nineteenth-century building near the town centre and combines two collections in one visit: the Vendée Wars on one side, a small but interesting fine-art collection on the other. The history section is the main draw, with weapons, banners, contemporary prints, and a careful, balanced telling of one of the most savage episodes of the Revolution.

The art collection runs from seventeenth-century devotional paintings through to the twentieth century, with a particular focus on artists from the Cholet region. Allow about an hour for the wars and another for the paintings.

A story
The museum's central exhibit is the Vendée Wars of 1793-96, a Catholic-royalist insurrection against the French Revolutionary Republic in which somewhere between 150,000 and 250,000 people died. Cholet was one of the worst battlegrounds, and the museum does not skirt the worst of it — the massacres, the colonnes infernales, the burning of villages.
