Abri des Pèlerins

Pilgrim shelter near the Ossuary, built for the many post-war visitors

The Abri des Pèlerins — the Pilgrims' Shelter — stands beside the Ossuary on the right bank battlefield, a stone refectory built in the 1920s for the huge numbers of bereaved families who came in the years after the war to look for the graves of their dead. It still serves a function as a visitor centre and small café.

A short pause here, between the Ossuary and the walk to Fleury, is a useful break in what is an emotionally demanding battlefield circuit. The simple building itself is a quiet reminder of the long, slow grief work that followed the battle.
