Things to Do

Verdun divides cleanly in two: the WWI battlefields in the hills north of the city, and the historic town itself on the Meuse. The battlefields are the reason most people come. Allow a full day at minimum: start at the Mémorial de Verdun for context, work outward to Fort de Douaumont, the Ossuary, the destroyed village of Fleury-devant-Douaumont, the Bayonet Trench, and Fort de Vaux. Add a second day if you want to take in the right bank as well — Le Mort-Homme, Hill 304, and the American memorials at Romagne and Montfaucon.

In town, the Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, the Citadelle Souterraine and the Monument à la Victoire are the highlights. A walk along the Meuse and across the Pont Chaussée rounds out a couple of pleasant hours.
