Côte 304 (Hill 304)

Left-bank hill, lost five metres of height to shellfire in 1916

Hill 304 sits a few kilometres west of Le Mort-Homme on the same left-bank ridge. It was so heavily shelled in the summer of 1916 that its summit was measured by surveyors after the war as 295 metres rather than 300 — five metres of hillside literally pulverised by German artillery.

A modest pylon-shaped monument marks the top, with the names of the regiments who fought here. As with Le Mort-Homme, the site is rarely visited and all the more affecting for it; you can often have the whole hill to yourself.
